Financial Aid

 

Scholarships

Though the majority of financial aid for our dental programs is provided through loans, the College of Dentistry does have a number of need-based scholarships available to our students. You may be awarded a need based scholarship if you have demonstrated financial need, based on your FAFSA information. Merit scholarships are rare. Parental information is required on financial aid applications, and a subsequent parent tax return will be required. Dental students are encouraged to seek outside financial support within their hometown communities. Contacting service clubs, dental societies, hospital auxiliaries, and church organizations, can offer other potential sources of financial assistance.

The UF College of Dentistry attempts to provide additional assistance via college scholarships and loans. These resources are very limited. All awards are based on eligibility and availability.

During the 2006-2007 school year, UFCD awarded $877,349.00 in need-based scholarships to 93 students. Dental students received scholarships from the UF Foundation, Academy 100, the American Dental Association, Hispanic Dental Association, Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

UF Endowed Scholarships and Fellowships

The following endowed scholarships and fellowships are administered by the UF Foundation. For information, check with the departmental contact person or the UF Foundation Web site.

  • Andrew Abel Dental Scholarship Fund
    Eligibility: dental students who require financial assistance and display excellence in their academic and/or clinical endeavors.
  • Morton Amsterdam Foundation Scholarship
    Eligibility: dental students.
  • Marshall M. and Jeannette Butts DeWitt Scholarship Fund
    Eligibility: dental students with financial need who display academic achievement and motivation.
  • Walter Lorenz Endowed Scholarship
    Eligibility: students enrolled in the maxillofacial surgery residency program.
  • Parker E. Mahan, D.D.S., Ph.D., Endowed Fellowship
    Eligibility: dental students.
  • William R. Rambo, Sr., Scholarship in Dentistry
    Eligibility: dental students.
  • William T. and Jackie C. Reid Scholarship in Dentistry Fund
    Eligibility: financially needy dental students with high scholastic averages.
  • Krisia and Steve Rhoden Memorial Scholarship Fund
    Eligibility: financial need; consideration to students from the Caribbean nations, including but not limited to Jamaica.
  • Cleo Talley Sanders Endowment Fund
    Eligibility: meritorious first-year dental students.

Non-Endowed Scholarships

  • Claire Pitts Brown Scholarship Fund
    Eligibility: meritorious dentistry students.
  • David A. Grainger Scholarship
    Eligibility: meritorious dentistry students.
  • Dentistry Professional Scholarship-Funded by the Provost's Office
    Eligibility: dental students with financial need.

Donor Scholarships

  • Charlotte Liberty Dental Scholarship
    Eligibility: dental students with financial need.
  • Shands Board of Directors Scholarship
    Eligibility: dental students with financial need.

Other Sources of Financial Aid

The ADA Foundation has a scholarship program for students pursuing careers in dentistry, dental hygiene, dental assisting and dental laboratory technology.

The NHSC offers a competitive scholarship program designed for students committed to providing primary health care in communities of greatest need. Scholarship recipients serve where they are most needed upon completion of their training.

The program offers the following benefits for up to 4 years of education:

  • Payment of tuition and fees
  • Twelve monthly stipend payments per year of scholarship support
  • Payment of other reasonable educational expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment

The Scholarship program of the Academy of LDS Dentists is a manifestation of the members' desire to give. The Academy receives applications for assistance from 30-50 individuals each year. Dental students must have completed at least one year of dental school and be amember of the academy of LDS Dentist to be eligible to receive this scholarship (You may register as a student member of the Academy at their website)

HSF/General College Scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a college degree.

The Health Professions Scholarship Program is for American Indian and Alaska Native students, who are members of their Tribe (federally recognized only), enrolled in health professions and allied health professions programs. Students incur service obligations and payback requirements on acceptance of funding from this program. Priority is given to graduate students and junior- and senior-level students unless otherwise specified.

Health Professions Scholarships are awarded for a one year period (12 months of support), with re-application required for each year of continuation. Stipends are paid for the 12-month period beginning each year from August 1 through July 31 for health and allied health professional education up to four years full-time or up to eight years part-time.

Consider the Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP): It covers 100% of dental school tuition – along with a monthly stipend of $1,605 to cover living expenses for up to four years.

Consider the Navy Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP): It provides anywhere from $143,000 to $240,000 while attending dental school – including a monthly military salary plus generous food and housing allowances for up to 48 months. Not to mention comprehensive health-care benefits. Note that this specific offer is exclusive to the Navy and not available in other military service branches.

If you're enrolled in an ADA-accredited D.D.S. or D.M.D. program, you may be eligible to receive our full-tuition scholarship program for up to four years. You'll also receive money for books and academic fees, plus a monthly stipend of $1,900. During academic breaks, you'll train alongside other U.S. Army Health Care professionals. Qualifying dental students are also eligible to receive a $20,000 sign-on bonus.
The Air Force offers scholarships for Healthcare professionals in three- or four-year periods. This scholarship covers all tuition and required fees, including textbooks, small equipment items and supplies needed for study. You’ll also receive a monthly allowance of approximately $1,605 for living expenses. While on scholarship you’ll spend 45 days on active duty in the Air Force and once you graduate you’ll serve active duty: four years for a four year scholarship and three years for a three year scholarship.

The Air Force Financial Assistance Program for medical and dental residencies can help you complete your residency without having to worry about finances. You will receive more than $28,000 for every year you participate in the program and receive a monthly stipend of $1,605 to cover living expenses. Upon completion of your residency, you’ll have a one year obligation for each year of participation plus one extra year.

This is a list compiled by the American Dental Education Association of the various federal and state loan repayment programs for which dental graduates may be eligible. Participating programs and contact information is subject to change.
