Internationally-Educated Dentists Program

Four-Year DMD Program

This 4-year program leads to a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. This degree allows graduates to take the dental board exam in any state in the United States. Students enrolled in this program take the same courses as regularly enrolled DMD students. Up to 2 students may be accepted into this program each year.

This program was designed for internationally educated dentists who are legal residents of the state of Florida. Florida residents have priority in admission to this program.

Deadline

The application deadline is December 1st. All applications are evaluated after this date. Late applications will not be considered.

Program Qualifications

  1. To be eligible for admission you must be a United States citizen or have a permanent resident visa and proof of your status. Resident visas include:

    * U. S. permanent residents with I-551.
    * Eligible noncitizens with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security showing one of the following designations: "Refugee," "Asylum Granted," "Parolee" or"Cuban-Haitian Entrant ".

    Students in the U. S. on an F1 or F2 student visa only or on a J1 or J2 exchange visitor visa only, or on a G- series visa (pertaining to international organizations) are not eligible.
  2. A TOEFL score of 80 on the Internet-Based version, www.toefl.org (the UF College of Dentistry code is 8612).
  3. Score at least 75 percent on all sections of Part I of the National Dental Board Examination within four years of the application date. Visit www.ada.org.
  4. Hold a dental license to practice in a foreign country.
  5. You must be a graduate of an international dental school who has satisfactorily completed an academic program of not less than four years, resulting in a degree, diploma, or certificate in dentistry recognized by the appropriate civil authorities of the country in which the school is located.

Application Procedure

  1. File a Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists (CAAPID) with ADEA. Application opens June 8, 2009. We recommend applying in the late summer (August).

    Send the following information to CAAPID along with your application:
    • An official transcript translated and certified with a GPA in a Course by Course evaluation report from ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.), PO BOX 92970, Milwaukee, WI 53202-0970, 414.298.3400, www.ece.org). Only documents certified by ECE will be considered.
    • 2 Letters of evaluation. Provide one personal and one professional letter of recommendation.
      • To view the status of your letters of evaluation submitted to CAAPID you need to (1) login to your CAAPID application, (2) select the "Status" option, and (3) select "evaluators" and review the date of receipt and the date each of your letters were mailed by CAAPID.
  2. Send directly to the Office of Admissions at the College of Dentistry:
  • Official National Dental Board Examination scores no older than within four years of the application date. Visit www.ada.org.
  • Official TOEFL scores, www.toefl.org.
  • Official Dental school transcripts (including class standing).
  • Certified copy of diploma and dental license.
  • Proof of US citizenship or copy of the front and back of your Resident Alien Visa (Green Card).
  1. Visit the UF Admissions page to complete Part I of your UF application online. Choose the Professional Schools option, complete the necessary forms, and pay the $30 application fee. Once you have submitted your payment, you will be given an 8-digit UFID number. You will need this number to complete the second part of your application. Note: this is to be completed online. You do not need to make copies or mail this form to our office.
  2. Complete the UF Application Part IIPDF[243K] and print it out.

  3. CAAPID will send your application to us within 6–8 weeks. To check on your application status, log on to your CAAPID account. When we receive your application from CAAPID, it will be reviewed after December 1st.
  4. An interview is required for admission. Applicants who are invited to interview will be notified. Interviews are conducted after the 1st of the year into early spring.
  5. The Admissions Committee will review the applications and candidates selected for membership in the UFCD class entering in the fall will be notified in the spring.

Application Deadline

Application forms and all documentation must be completed by December 1st, nine months before the anticipated starting date the following August. Late applications will not be accepted. Selected candidates are required to participate in an interview at the College of Dentistry in Gainesville, Florida.

International dental applicants seeking admission who are currently enrolled in another dental school program (advanced standing, certificate, graduate, general practice residency or advanced education in general dentistry) must complete their current program prior to enrollment.

Accepted candidates will enter the regular first-year dental curriculum and must complete all degree requirements with members of the regular dental class. Students must purchase all required instruments and texts, and pay regular University of Florida College of Dentistry tuition and fees.
