Surgical Implant Placement for the General Dentist

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to teach the general dentist how to place and restore dental implants. A unique feature of this course is an actual patient experience, so that each dentist gets the opportunity to place implants--not in plastic, but in bone. At the end of the course, participants should have the ability to correctly treatment plan, place, and restore dental implants in areas of abundant bone.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this series, the participant will be knowledgeable in treatment planning, radiographic analysis, patient selection, medical considerations, surgical techniques, and patient case presentations for the placement and restoration of dental implants.

Session 1: August 21-22, 2009

This session focuses on the didactic knowledge needed for implant surgery. Topics include treatment planning, radiographic analysis, patient selection, medical considerations, surgical techniques, and patient case presentations. Hands-on activities include suture exercises and placement of implants in artificial jaws. A live patient demonstration will be done.

Session 2: Sept. 25-26, 2009

This session is primarily surgical. Course participants will be encouraged to bring a patient to the course for a mentored surgical experience. Up to 8 practitioners can place implants this weekend. Didactic lectures included esthetics and minor bone grafting.

Session 3: October 9-10, 2009

This weekend is restorative in focus, but will also include surgical opportunities for an additional 4 dentists. Implant crowns and overdentures will be discussed in detail.
