Advanced Skills for the Accomplished Dental Hygienist: Ultrasonics
Course Description
A thorough knowledge of the latest uses of the ultrasonic scaler is essential in your practice as a dental hygienist. The use of ultrasonic instrumentation procedures in dentistry is in an exciting period of transition and growth. This hands-on workshop will allow the participant to be able to understand the mode of action of various ultrasonic scalers and describe their various uses in dental hygiene instrumentation. A review of indications and contraindications will be given to the participants, as well as an explanation of the rationale behind ultrasonic instrument selection.
Course Objectives
It is with intention that this course provides each of the following to its participants:
- A detailed explanation of the principles of operation of ultrasonic devices
- An explanation of the rationale behind ultrasonic instrument selection
- A review of the indications and contraindications regarding the use of ultrasonic scaling devices
- A comparing and contrasting of ultrasonic scaling versus hand scaling
- A description and explanation of the latest ultrasonic inserts available
- A list of methods for self-evaluating the effectiveness of ultrasonic instrumentation
Faculty
- Christine Patel, R.D.H., B.S.
- Dr. Patel graduated from St. Petersburg College in 1984 (AS & AA in Dental Hygiene), then received her B.S. in Public Health Dental Hygiene from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1986. She gained private practice experience from 1986-1992 before she began teaching as an adjunct faculty at St. Petersburg College 1991-2003. In 2003 Christine became full-time faculty member and continues up to the present time. Currently, she teaches clinic, preclinic, laboratory, Dental Hygiene didactic courses and is working on her graduate degree in Adult Education at the University of South Florida.
