UFCD Curriculum Electives

Electives are courses designed to allow dental students the opportunity to vary their curriculum according to individual interests. Electives are intended to supplement, not to replace any part of, the core curriculum.

Requirements

Each student is required to complete a minimum of 60 clock hours (6 credit hours) of approved elective courses, plus 6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in the junior year and 6 CEUs in the senior year. The elective course requirement will be 6 credit hours of course work (equal to 10 clock hours per credit hour). The Continuing Education requirement of 12 CEUs (6 in junior year and 6 in senior year) is equal to 12 clock hours or the equivalent of two full days of CE courses.

The maximum credit for any approved elective is 3.0 credit hours (30 clock hours).

Registration for UFCD Electives

To enroll, the student must complete the Elective Enrollment Request and obtain the course director’s signature. The director or student then forwards the request form to the Office of Education to ensure proper student registration.

Mentored Research Elective - (Non Research Track)

The goal of this research elective is to provide the student with a short term faculty mentored research experience. Complete the elective enrollment request form. Contact Dr. Ken Anusavice to confirm your faculty mentor, project, timeline.

UFCD Research Track Electives

The Research Track is intended for students who are committed to obtaining a concentrated research experience during dental school. Most of the students in this program have an interest in an academic career.

Registration for New Electives

Individually arranged or newly proposed electives: If a faculty member wishes to offer a new elective or a student desires an elective not currently available, the student should go to the faculty who will supervise the elective and serve as the Elective Course Director. After discussion, the Elective Course Director and the student should decide on the elective title, beginning date, anticipated completion date, and the total hours required to complete the elective. The Elective Course Director should then complete an application form and forward it to the Curriculum Committee for approval. If the application is approved, it will be forwarded to the Curriculum Committee for further discussion and official approval of the elective as planned. The Elective course director and student(s) will be notified of the Committee's final action.

Registration for Continuing Education Units

To register for continuing dental education courses, students may choose from a range of approved local, state, national and academic university providers. UFCD Continuing Education courses are at no charge to students but you must enroll and receive a certificate of attendance. Contact the CE Office if you have any questions. Students who wish to take other continuing education courses will do so at their own expense. You must turn in a copy of your certificate to the Office of Education to verify you have met the 6 hour CEU requirement for the junior year and the 6 hour CEU requirement for the senior year. CEUs in excess of the 6 hours required in the junior year cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of the senior year. You may elect to acquire 2 of your 6 required CEU's each year in an online format.

Students interested in registering for a CE course that conflicts with scheduled classes, clinics, rotations or other mandated College activities and events must complete a Planned Student Leave of Absence form.PDF This form requires the signature of your course directors and TEAM Leader. Students should not request and will not be granted a leave of absence to attend any CE course that interferes with a scheduled course examination or a mandated laboratory. For further information on the student leave policy, consult the UFCD Student Handbook.PDF
