Clinic Description
The University of Florida College of Dentistry - Jacksonville Clinic's mission is to provide postgraduate dental education for 6 Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residents. Training is also provided for 2 foreign trained dental students assigned to the Jacksonville Clinic for 1 year assignments.
The AEGD residency began operations in July 1987 with 3 AEGD residents. The residency facility is a 2-story, 13,000 square feet building completed in 1987. The first floor houses the educational programs, and consists of 12 dental operatories, 2 radiology rooms, a dental laboratory, a conference room, and required support areas. There are numerous support personnel to help the residents and students achieve their educational goals. The administrative staff consists of a receptionist, secretary, cashier, facility manager, and patient financial counselor. A dental hygienist and 8 full time dental assistants are available to help residents provide clinical dental services for their patients.

The patient population comes primarily from downtown Jacksonville in Duval County. During the 2003-2004 academic year, the clinic had more than 10,000 patient visits, an average of more than 175 patients/week. On an average day, the clinic serves 10 emergency patients and 30 scheduled patients. The residents see 50 or so new patients each month, and there is a 3-4 month waiting list for new patient evaluations.
The clinic provides complete evaluation and complex comprehensive care to the majority of patients treated. 'Limited care patients' are also treated if the resident will obtain considerable educational value from the procedures provided. 85% of clinic time is spent with scheduled, comprehensive care patients, and 15% is spent providing emergency care. Most of the didactic portion (lectures and seminars) are held during lunchtime.
Several policies are in place to ensure residents learn effective practice management techniques. To ensure financial arrangements go smoothly and as intended, all patients meet with the financial advisor who explains what fees are to be paid at each scheduled appointment. The collection rate for dental services provided has exceeded 99% for the last three years.
