Research
By its nature, Oral Biology unites many scientific disciplines. The Department of Oral Biology is home to over 80 bright, energetic people using state-of-the-art techniques to study the molecular genetics and physiology of bacterial pathogenesis, the physiology, pharmacology and genetics of exocrine secretion, basic function and modulation of the mucosal immune system, autoimmunity and the interaction of pathogenic organisms with host cells. A broad multidisciplinary approach is employed in all laboratories and a highly supportive and collaborative atmosphere exists that has allowed researchers in our Department to interact with faculty in our Department, in the College and throughout the University community.
The University of Florida College of Dentistry is a recipient of the prestigious National Research Service Award Institutional Comprehensive Training Grant in Oral Biology, a 5 year $3.5 million award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to assist in the support of pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and short-term training in biological research. This grant helps the college achieve its goal of preparing a multidisciplinary workforce that will meet future needs in oral biological research. There are currently fifteen fellows funded by this grant. For more information, please contact the grant's Program Director, William McArthur.
