Neuroscience

The Division of Neuroscience is the basic science wing of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Diagnostic Sciences. The primary focus of the division is to investigate peripheral and central nervous system mechanisms that underlie acute, chronic and pathological pain. Ultimately, this knowledge is passed to professional students to improve the practice of dentistry and medicine.

The faculty of our division combine behavior, electrophysiology, pharmacology, immunocytochemistry and molecular biology to unravel the fundamental features of pain induction and control. Individual faculty employ preparations that range from dissociated dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord slice, to human brain imaging and psychophysics. Active research projects examine the contribution of protons, ATP, NMDA, opioid, and vanilloid receptors, proinflammatory peptides, gender and psychological factors to the pain experience. The division is engaged in a number of collaborative projects with the faculty of the Departments of Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Pharmacology and Therapeutics of the College of Medicine, with the Department of Physiological Sciences of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Whitney Laboratory and with other faculty within departments of the College of Dentistry.
