Committee Composition
The committee will consist of twelve full-time faculty members elected by the Faculty Assembly for three-year terms, three private practitioners identified by the Dean for three-year terms, one member from an alumni group identified by the Dean for a three-year term, three dental students, and one member from the basic science departments identified by the Dean for a three-year term. Members of this committee who are not full-time members of the College of Dentistry will be identified by the Dean, whether they are elected by their constituents or appointed, and may be re-appointed for one additional three-year term. The Director of Student and Multicultural Affairs, the Freshmen class advisor, and the Director of Student Financial Aid will serve as ex-officio members. All committee recommendations are presented directly to the Dean.
Standing Committee Charge
As stated in the Constitution and Bylaws, it is the responsibility of the committee to recruit, select, and recommend to the Dean the most outstanding group of student applicants for admission to the D.M.D. program of the College of Dentistry. The committee may seek consultation with relevant individuals, committees, or departments within the College, but will have the final responsibility for establishing all selection criteria for admission.
Additional Charge from the Dean for 2011–2012
I am requesting that the Student Admissions and Recruitment Committee continue to work to evaluate our admissions processes and procedures in regards to qualified underrepresented minority applicants.
Each standing faculty committee will be charged with reviewing relevant outcome measures from the new college strategic plan. The measures which should be reviewed by the Student Admissions and Recruitment Committee include:
- Annual demographic profile (number, percent) of students in terms of age, race/ethnicity, gender and rank.
The committee should evaluate performance on these measures and when appropriate, action plans for improvement should be instituted using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. The PDCA is the college's model for outcomes assessment and evaluation.
Individual Faculty Member Responsibilities
Members of the Admissions Committee are required to attend 4 meetings throughout the year. These meetings include a full-day session in November, as well as one- to two-hour meetings in January, February and June, respectively. In addition, committee members must commit to interviewing potential students for six ½ days between July and February each year. A schedule of interview dates and meeting dates for the upcoming year becomes available in May of each year.
Preparation time outside of meetings varies by committee member but may include review of applications in the Office of Admissions. Application essays are available online for committee members to review.
Time commitment: A minimum of 35-40 hours per year as described above.
