Committee Composition
The committee consists of ten full-time faculty members elected by the Faculty Assembly for three-year terms; no more than three private practitioners, one from an alumni group identified by the Dean for a one-year term; three dental students; one member from the basic science departments identified by the Dean; the Director of Student and Multicultural Affairs, the Freshman class advisor, the Director of Student Financial Aid, and the Director of the Internationally-Educated Dentist Program as ex officio members; and the Assistant Dean for Admissions as a member and permanent chairperson of the committee. Members of this committee who are not full-time members of the College of Dentistry will be identified by the Dean whether they are elected by their constituents or appointed. The committee's recommendations are presented directly to the Dean.
Standing Committee Charge
It is the responsibility of this committee to recruit and select and recommend to the Dean the most outstanding group of student applicants for admission to the D.M.D. program of the College of Dentistry.
Additional Charge from the Dean for 2009–2010
I am requesting that the Student Admissions and Recruitment Committee continue to work to evaluate our admissions processes and procedures in regards to qualified underrepresented minority applicants.
This year, each standing faculty committee will be charged with reviewing relevant outcome measures from the college strategic plan. The measures which should be reviewed by the Student Admissions and Recruitment Committee include:
- The number of under-represented minority applicants, interviewees and enrollees in pre-doctoral programs.
The committee should evaluate performance on these measures and when appropriate, action plans for improvement should be instituted using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. The PDCA is the college’s model for outcomes assessment and evaluation.
Individual Faculty Member Responsibilities
Members of the Admissions Committee are required to attend 4 meetings throughout the year. These meetings include a full-day session in November, as well as one- to two-hour meetings in January, February and June, respectively. In addition, committee members must commit to interviewing potential students for six ˝ days between July and February each year. A schedule of interview dates and meeting dates for the upcoming year becomes available in May of each year.
Preparation time outside of meetings varies by committee member but may include review of applications in the Office of Admissions. Application essays are available online for committee members to review.
Time commitment: A minimum of 35-40 hours per year as described above.
A GroupWise distribution of this committee is located in GroupWise at %STU_ADMISS_COMM.
