UF College of Dentistry Deans Seminar Series & The Department of Community Dentistry and Behavioral Science invite you to:
Nurturing Social Responsibility Through Community Service Learning
Monday, July 13 from Noon to 1pm
Room 1320 (HPNP Building)
Shafik Dharamsi, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Family Practice
Faculty of Medicine & Associate Director, UBC Centre for International Health, University of British Columbia

In recent years, university students, especially those in the health sciences, have expressed an increasing interest in participating in global health experiences in low-income countries where there are pronounced inequities in health and socio-economic development. Many universities are sending students to developing contexts as volunteers as a practice that is increasingly being seen as an opportunity for International Service-Learning (ISL). There is a growing concern, however, around the conflicting motivations affecting ISL. Since ISL opportunities are often set in vulnerable communities in resource poor settings, they create the potential for unintentional harm and exploitation. For example, healthcare students might seek to practice clinical skills with limited training, and projects can create dependency relationships rather than fostering an equal and collaborative partnership with communities. Vulnerable communities then become a means to the students’ or institutions’ ends instead of serving first the community identified needs and empowerment interests. Motivations range from a positive desire to promote equity, and to work with and for communities, as well as, and sometimes primarily to, fulfill a graduation requirement, and/or to enhance a résumé. The negative impact of these often conflicting motivations to the goals of ISL projects and the communities that host students has not been adequately studied. In this seminar, the presenter will explore the ethical implications of international service learning, e.g. disruption of community, stereotyping, disrespectful behaviour, creation of dependence, and practicing clinical skills without qualifications. The presenter will highlight ethical and social justice principles for effective ISL practice based on a study to examine how an ISL experience coupled with critical reflection can serve as a pedagogical approach to enhance socially responsible approaches to service.

--Free and open to the public
--The movie, Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life, was the most decorated film of 2007 and tells the story of 15-year-old Darius Weems from Athens, Ga., as he leaves home for the first time.  Darius was born with Muscular Dystrophy, the most common fatal genetic disorder to affect children worldwide.  Darius and his accompanying friends-turned-filmmakers have a specific goal: to get his wheelchair customized on MTV’s hit show, “Pimp My Ride.”  Along the way they discover joy, brotherhood, and the knowledge that life, even when imperfect, is always worth the ride.  An inspirational film and a must see!

11/04/2009 Dean’s Seminar Series

What Can We Learn from Clinically Failed Ceramic Restorations?
Wednesday, November 4 from Noon to 1pm in D3-3
Dr. Susanne S. Scherrer

University of Geneva, School of Dental Medicine
Department of Prosthodontics-Biomaterials, Geneva, Switzerland
Dr. Paulo Francisco Cesar
Universidade de São Paulo, Faculdade de Odontologia
Departamento de Materiais Dentários,  Universitária Sao Paulo, SP – Brasil
This is intended for General Dentists, Prosthodontists, Dental Technicians, Dental Assistants, Prosthodontic Residents, and Dental Students
--When chipping or fracture of a ceramic restoration occurs in a clinical practice, the clinician must decide whether to replace or repair the prosthesis.  However, valuable information may be obtained by making an impression of the fracture surface and working with a materials scientist who can assist in determining the likely cause of fracture.  This session will provide an overview of fractography and the techniques that are required of both clinician and scientist to perform a reliable failure analysis of these clinical cases.
Attendees will be able to:
1. Identify the purpose of descriptive fractography for clinically failed restorations.
2. Describe the recommended procedure and conditions for making an impression of a fractured surface.
3. Identify the types of information that may can be obtained from failure analysis.

11/04/2009 Dean’s Seminar Series

Dental ceramic restorations: Clinical failure analysis using descriptive fractography
Wednesday, November 4 from 3 to 4pm in D3-3
Dr. Susanne S. Scherrer

University  of  Geneva, School of Dental Medicine
Department of Prosthodontics-Biomaterials, Geneva, Switzerland
Dr. Paulo Francisco Cesar
Universidade de São Paulo, Faculdade de Odontologia
Departamento de Materiais Dentários, Universitária Sao Paulo, SP - Brasil
Dental ceramic restorations: Clinical failure analysis using descriptive fractography
This is intended for materials scientists, dental lab technicians, and faculty who have experience with fractography and microscopy of fractured clinical restorations
--All-ceramic restorations are being increasingly used for posterior teeth-a zone in which the restorations are subjected to higher masticatory loads than on anterior teeth. Consequently, an increased frequency of veneer ceramic chipping or through-the-core-thickness fractures of posterior crowns may be expected. Understanding the reasons for fracture is of key importance to the dental community. To this end, the analysis of clinical failures will be described using fractographic techniques.  This comprises the fracture surface analysis of failed ceramic restorations using a stereomicroscope as well as the SEM in order to identify markings that are indicators of the direction of crack propagation. Mapping of these crack features of the failed component provide evidence of the failure initiation site and what might be done to improve the lifetime of these restorations.
Attendees will be able to:
1. Identify basic terms and principles of descriptive fractography for clinically failed restorations.
2. Recognize classic fractographic features on different ceramic materials.
3. Improve the anatomical design of CAD-CAM ceramic framework and veneering ceramic based on the results obtained from the failure analysis.
