Pediatric Dentistry Mini-Residency

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of a mini-residency is to provide a flexible continuing education vehicle for dental practitioners interested in obtaining advanced knowledge and skills prerequisite to delivering proficient dental care to young children. The general goal is to expand the number and improve the quality of pediatric dental services rendered in a private practice or public health clinic setting. Training in a miniresidency will enhance one's qualifications when applying: 1) for hospital staff and operating room privileges, 2) for advanced specialty education programs in pediatric dentistry, and/or 3) for a pediatric conscious sedation permit. The mini-residency is designed to provide hands-on clinical learning experiences with one-on-one instruction and supervision of challenging cases rendered in various environments using a spectrum of modalities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Discuss the components of the health history and physical and behavioral assessment of a child
  2. Evaluate the patient's need for behavior modification using various nonpharmacological and pharmacologic modalities.
  3. Discuss the sequence of procedures used in the practice of hospital dental care and provide appropriate comprehensive care in an operating room environment
  4. Describe the rationalization for choosing a local anesthetic agent suitable for the child patient and various techniques of pain control
  5. Understand the various restorative options for carious, traumatized and pulpally-involved primary and young permanent teeth
  6. Understand how to manage emergency dental treatment of children
  7. Recognize the problems of arch length discrepancy and various options for treatment

FACULTY:

  • Dr. Daniela Rodrigues Silva earned her D.D.S. degree at the Federal University of Goiás, Brazil in 1986. She completed her first residency in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of São Paulo, Brazil in 1989, and later on completed her Master Degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan in 2002. She became Board Eligible in Pediatric Dentistry in the United States in 2003. Dr. Silva was in private practice in Goiânia, Brazil for over 15 years and had a part-time faculty position in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the School of Dentistry of Anápolis, Goiás, Brazil from 1990-2000. Dr. Silva was also the President of the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry of Goiás from 1998- 2000. In March 2003, Dr. Silva joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry as an Assistant Professor, and in September 2004 she joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Florida College of Dentistry.
