Message from Dean Dolan

Teresa A. Dolan, DDS, MPHIn our continual effort for self-improvement, we can sometimes forget to celebrate all the good things we do and do well. The college has much good work happening everyday in the ongoing business of dental education, research and service.

One of these achievements of particular pride to me is that of the Class of 2006, which was ranked No. 5 of the 55 dental schools participating on the Part II of the National Board Dental Examinations. News of this achievement comes on the heels of the class’ 100 percent first time pass rate on the Florida licensure exam. My kudos to the Class of 2006 for this impressive accomplishment, and to the faculty and staff who successfully educated and mentored these new dentists.

Another example of good work accomplished by the college’s students includes that of D.M.D. students in clinics across the state participating in the college’s Statewide Network for Community Oral Health. We’ve included one-such heart warming story in this eNews, “The Molar Express,” reprinted from the Tallahassee Democrat and featuring two D.M.D. students giving the very best of themselves to pediatric dental patients in a Leon County clinic.

As you take time to read through this issue of the UFCD Alumni eNews, I hope you’ll also take time to reflect on the good things you do well everyday to help your patients, your community and your profession.

Kids get dental care from the 'Molar Express'
By Jeff Burlew/DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

Manav Malik tried to reassure Derrick Adams, 10, recently as he gave him an X-ray at the Leon County Health Department's dental center.

"You're doing so good, you know that?" Malik said. "We're almost done here."

Malik, a student at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, had to give Derrick a numbing shot before filling a cavity. Instead of using the scary word "needle," he told the boy he'd be getting some "sleepy juice." And rather than using a drill, he summoned "Mr. Whistle" to get rid of the tooth decay.

"If they have a bad experience now, they're scarred for the rest of their lives," he later explained.

The Center for Dental Care & Prevention on Railroad Avenue isn't a typical dentist's office. Nicknamed "The Molar Express" because of its train-station theme, it treats patients between the ages of 5 and 20. The youngsters are on Medicaid, and without the facility, they'd have nowhere to go for dental care besides the emergency room. Click here for the full story….

Craniofacial Camp receives Lucy Gooding grant

Children with craniofacial malformation will always have a safe place for summer fun thanks to a generous donation from the Lucy Gooding Charitable Foundation Trust.

Cranio Camp

The donation of $400,000 over the next four years will fund in perpetuity the University of Florida Craniofacial Center’s Craniofacial Camp, which has been held at the Montgomery Conference Center on beautiful Lake Emerald near Starke for the past 12 years. Click here for more information on how this three-day summer camp provides a haven for children with craniofacial malformations and their families.
