UF College of Dentistry: Admissions

DMD Admissions

The University of Florida College of Dentistry attracts students of the highest caliber into its academic programs. Superior standards of scholastic achievement, moral character, and motivation are expected of the applicants.

The student of dentistry must possess a high level of basic aptitude and supplement it with a strong academic pre-professional education in order to master the vast area of science with which the dentist must be familiar. Men and women from varied social and ethnic backgrounds are sought to join the dental profession. Currently the first-year class numbers approximately 80 students.

Applicants to the College of Dentistry D.M.D. program should plan on completing the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Applicants with an overall strong “B” average (3.2 to 3.4 on a 4.0 scale) as a minimum will receive strongest consideration. Except in unusual circumstances, above average scores (15) are required on all of the academic and perceptual-ability portions of the Dental Admission Test.

The University of Florida College of Dentistry does not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, sex, marital status, religion, age, or disability. The university, when appropriate, provides accommodations for disabled individuals upon request.

Application Procedures and Deadline

back

Candidates should realize that admission to the College of Dentistry is highly competitive. The applicant is evaluated on the basis of information gained from previous academic records, scores on the Dental Admission Test, recommendations by pre-professional advisors and teachers, and a personal interview. The College of Dentistry makes every effort to select those students most qualified by present standards for a career in dentistry.

  1. Applications must be made through the Association of American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). Applications are available online at www.adea.org. Applications cannot be made directly to the college. The college cannot accept an application which is not processed through AADSAS.
  2. The completed AADSAS application forms and supporting documents (transcripts and letters of recommendation) must be returned directly to AADSAS and must be received by AADSAS no later than Dec. 1 of the calendar year of anticipated enrollment in dental school. Applications not received by AADSAS on or before Dec. 1 will not be accepted. Exception is not made to the Dec. 1 closing date for any reason. Applicants are advised to apply to AADSAS as early as possible.
  3. The data compiled by AADSAS will be carefully evaluated by the Admissions Committee, and promising applicants will be invited by the College of Dentistry to submit Formal Application forms which request additional information. The Formal Application forms should be returned promptly. An application fee of $30 must be sent with the Formal Application form. This fee is not refundable.
  4. Every applicant must take the Dental Admission Test, preferably preceding application to AADSAS or, at the latest, by mid-November. The test is only available in a computerized format. For more information go online to www.ada.org or write to the Division of Educational Measurements, American Dental Association, 211 East Chicago Avenue , Chicago , Ill. 60611 .
  5. After a review of existing application materials by the Admissions Committee, those applicants considered to be competitive will be invited for interviews. The invitation will specify a scheduled time for the interview. No applicant will be accepted for admission without a personal interview in Gainesville, Fla. Scheduled interviews must be confirmed in advance. Failure to appear for the interview at the appointed time will terminate the applicant's candidacy for admission in that year.
  6. Candidates recommended by the Admissions Committee and approved by the dean for membership in the class will be notified of their acceptance by mail during the late fall no earlier than Dec. 1. Upon receipt of an acceptance letter in December or January, the candidate will have at least 30 days to make a written reply accepting or rejecting the offered place in the class. A deposit of $200 is required to reserve a place in the class. The deposit will be applied toward payment of the individual's tuition upon enrollment. The admissions deposit will not be reimbursed to an individual who does not enroll in the term offered for admission unless the individual withdraws his/her acceptance of admission prior to the deadline published by the college. The deposit is waived for individuals who provide documentation that they have received an applications fee waiver because of economic need as determined by the AADSAS.
  7. Applicants notified of acceptance after Feb. 1 will be allowed 15 days in which to make a written reply.

The above procedures are established by the American Dental Education Association. Applicants seeking admission as first-year students in the University of Florida College of Dentistry who are currently enrolled in another school of dentistry will not be considered.
