Advanced Education in General Dentistry

The college offers advanced education in general dentistry programs at satellite clinics in St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Hialeah and Apopka. These one-year, ADA-accredited certificate programs emphasize the planning and execution of comprehensive dental treatment utilizing dental assistants. The programs include training in physical evaluation, operative dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry, geriatric dentistry, periodontology, fixed and removable prosthodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and sedation. A core curriculum of lectures, specialty seminars, and literature reviews comprises the didactic portion of each program. Rotations enable students to provide care for more complex dental patients and are offered in the areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery and community dentistry. The programs fulfill one of the educational requirements for certification established by the Certifying Board of General Dentistry.

Apopka This 12-month certificate program in Advanced Education in the College of Dentistry is located in Apopka, Florida. Community Health Centers, Inc. is committed to serve as the health care lifeguard for many of Central Florida's medically underserved populations and is a task which has been performed with vigor and pride for more than a quarter of a century. CHC continues its mission to provide needed services to rural communities and medically underserved populations with the knowledge that there can be few greater health priorities than a source for caring, sensitive, and knowledgeable care. This 12-month certificate program will provide advanced didactic and clinical training in all dental specialties. At CHC, emergency treatment is scheduled daily, however, the majority of treatment is comprehensive care. General dentistry includes diagnostic, preventive, restorative, rotary endodontic, periodontic, fixed removable and implants, prosthodontics and oral surgery procedures.
 
Hialeah This is a 12-month Certificate program designed to provide advanced clinical and didactic training in all disciplines of dentistry. The program facility houses 20 operatories, a dental laboratory, central sterilization and radiology suites, a library, resident computer facilities, and a staff lounge. Hialeah is located in south Florida near Miami. Over fifty faculty members, including specialists from all dental disciplines and general dentists, provide continuous coverage in the clinic. Patient treatment is frequently complex and challenging, with multiple opportunities for experience in dental implants, endodontics, periodontal surgery, advanced prosthodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, and orthodontics.
 
Jacksonville This 12-month certificate program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency is based in Jacksonville, Florida. The program begins July 1st and ends the following June 30th. This program offers a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study upon successful program completion. This program is designed to provide advanced training in clinical dentistry beyond the level of pre-doctoral education. Specifically, the program is intended to enhance the resident's confidence and competence in performing all aspects of general dentistry. The training includes experience in the recognized dental specialties, as well as the placement and restoration of dental implants.
 
St. Petersburg This 12-month Certificate Program is designed to provide advanced clinical and didactic training in disciplines of general dentistry beyond the training received in dental school. The program is located in a facility in St. Petersburg, Florida that houses 11 operatories and is designed to model the private practice settings. This facility is a satellite clinic for the College of Dentistry. All the clinical disciplines in dentistry are covered. Patient treatment is frequently complex and challenging, with multiple opportunities for experience in dental implants, periodontal surgery, advanced prosthetics, oral surgery, and orthodontics.

The faculty, which includes specialists from all the dental disciplines and general dentists, provide continuous coverage in the clinic. Seminars, literature reviews, case presentations, and treatment planning seminars are part of the educational program. Practice management is an integral part of the program.

Dental Public Health Residency

The purpose of this 12- or 24-month certificate program is to prepare residents to assume responsible dental public health positions at national, state, and local levels, and/or to assume faculty positions in the nation's dental and public health schools. The residency program includes instructional experiences in administration and research related to the expected competencies of the specialty, such as the epidemiology, prevention and control of oral diseases, the delivery and financing of care, the analysis and development of professional and community resources, and program planning and evaluation.

Graduates of the program will be qualified educationally for examination by the American Board of Dental Public Health.

Applicants must be graduates of an accredited dental school and hold a master's degree in public health (M.P.H.) or its equivalent from an educational institution accredited by either the Committee on Professional Education of the American Public Health Association or the Commission on Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Foreign dentists with an advanced degree should possess equivalent educational preparation.

Fellowship in Craniofacial Pain & Temporomandibular Function

This 24-month clinical fellowship is designed to prepare dentists to diagnose and treat pain and dysfunction problems involving the temporomandibular joint, occlusion, head and neck musculature, and neural and vascular structures. The didactic curriculum includes the oral biology core, advanced head and neck anatomy, research design, seminars and literature review of current research on pain and craniomandibular dysfunction. The clinical program emphasizes observation and participation in patient treatment. The clinics are multidisciplinary, involving the areas of anesthesiology, physical therapy, and all of the dental disciplines. Prior completion of a graduate program in an area such as prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, or oral medicine or previous research experience is highly recommended. A clinical or laboratory research project and a limited teaching commitment are required.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

This three-year certificate program provides the required educational background for candidates to take the certification examination of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, as well as a broad spectrum of training in the oral diagnostic sciences to prepare students to practice in related fields if desired. The curriculum includes a core of didactic courses covering the basic sciences. In addition, students become proficient diagnostic histopathologists and have the opportunity to participate in the patient care activities of the Oral Pathology, Oral Oncology, and Diagnostic Radiology Clinics.

Students rotate on the surgical pathology, autopsy, and clinical laboratory services of the Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine. Opportunities for additional elective, didactic and clinical rotations are available to accommodate students who desire to emphasize a subspecialty area in oral medicine or oral and maxillofacial radiology. Each student conducts an approved research project and prepares the results for publication in a national refereed journal. Opportunities for teaching are provided.

Pediatric Dentistry Residency

The two-year program based at the college and Shands Hospital in Gainesville leads to certification in pediatric dentistry. Didactic and clinical training develop skills necessary to provide comprehensive care for the dental needs of all children including those with physical, mental, and/ or emotional disabilities. The didactic curriculum includes advanced courses in oral biology, pathology, pediatric medicine, biostatistics, growth and development, pediatric dental medicine, physical diagnosis, practice management, sedation, and orthodontics. Residents also participate in seminars on treatment planning for comprehensive care, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusion, and literature review.

The clinical curriculum includes experience in comprehensive preventive and restorative care, hospital-based dental care in an operating room setting, sedation and monitoring in the office setting, treatment of patients with oral facial anomalies, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusion, and emergency dental care.

Consultation and dental care are provided to patients referred from Pediatric Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, and Sickle Cell Disease clinics and from the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. The residents participate in a four-week anesthesiology rotation and a two-week pediatric medicine rotation. A clinical or laboratory research project is required, and a limited teaching commitment is required in the second year of the program.

The program meets requirements set forth by the Council on Dental Education. Trainees fulfilling the requirements will be eligible for examination by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
