High School
Students: Financial Aid
Dental education is an investment
in the future. In your future. Like any investment, it is something that
should be carefully considered. When you are looking at different dental
schools make sure when you are considering costs that you are looking at
the full cost of attendance.
It's easy
to get confused about costs
Dental schools vary widely in
their costs. Tuition is only part of the cost of attendance. In general,
tuition at state supported schools is less expensive for residents of that
state than tuition at private dental schools. You will also have additional
fees for things like instruments, supplies, textbooks, computer fees. And
you need to remember that the normal costs of living, like food, rent,
transportation, insurance, etc. will be different depending on where you
live. Large cities are, in general, more expensive places to live than
smaller towns.
Costs of
Attendance at the University of Florida College of Dentistry
Because we are a state supported
school, the costs of attendance at the University of Florida are comparatively
low. For 2002-2003, the tuition and fees were about $12,500/year or about
$6,100 per semester.
Financial
Aid
The major source of financial aid for
our DMD students is the federal Stafford Loan program. We are fortunate
that our comparatively low costs of attendance can be covered for
eligible students through this program. For more information about
Stafford loans Click
Here. We have limited scholarship and loan funds. Students
interested in receiving College of Dentistry financial aid must
complete an online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
with parental information each spring and a College of Dentistry
Financial Aid application. You can learn more about the FAFSA at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Another good resource
about financial aid is the Student Guide published by the US Department
of Education. Click Here
to access the Student Guide.
Some dental students participate
in programs that either provide scholarship funds while in school or provide
for pay back of dental school loans after graduation. The Army, Navy and
Air Force all have scholarship programs for dental students which pay students
for dental school expenses. After graduation, participating students serve
in the armed forces in exchange for the scholarship. Contact your local
recruiter for more details about these scholarship programs.
The National Health
Service Corps also has loan repayment programs. For more information

The Indian Health Service
also has both scholarship and loan repayment programs for dental
students. Go to http://www.ihs.gov/jobscareerdevelop/dhps/lrp/benifts.asp
