Selecting Restorative Materials:
An Evidence Based Collaborative Approach Between Clinician and Laboratory
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A discussion will be presented on the selection process for restorative materials, and how both clinical demands, and laboratory
requirements can be limited and satisfied through the evidence presented by materials research.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Attendees will gain a new and evidence based understanding of the role materials play in clinical outcomes, and how to reach beyond
long held biases in the materials selection process through thoughtful doctor-lab collaboration
FACULTY:
Dr. Dean Mersky, a 1976 graduate of the University Of Detroit School Of Dentistry, practiced in Manhattan Beach, California for 26 years. Dr. Mersky’s dental practice was
concentrated in the areas of treatment of TMJ, dental reconstruction, and cosmetic dentistry. His expertise with Captek restorations comes from the almost 2,000 Captek units that he has
placed, and the many different uses and clinical trials he has contributed. Additionally, Dr Mersky has authored many articles on the use of Captek in the restorative practice, and has lectured
on the material to dental groups nationally for the past several years.
Dr. John Wataha, B.S. in Chemistry, D.M.D. Ph.D in Biomaterials and Oral Biology, Professor in the Department of Biology and Maxillofacial Pathology, Medical College of Georgia. He is
coordinator of Biocompatibility Research Group, a member of the International Association for Dental Research, Academy of Dental Materials and Society for Biomaterials, and has authored
over 240 abstracts, scientific articles, and book chapters, and has given 96 invited presentations internationally about the topic of biocompatibility and its assessment for dental materials.
Al Fillastre, C.D.T., owns and operates Ceram-O-Arts, Dental Laboratory in Lakeland, Florida.and is the national technical consultant for Captek, providing technical support for dentists
and for Captek laboratories nationwide. Al is an accomplished technician in all disciplines within the Crown & Bridge laboratory. He has presented numerous hands-on clinics and seminars
in Ceramics, Composite Resins, Waxing & Metal Design, Model Work and has lectured extensively to technicians and dentists alike on quality, communication and technical skills. Al personally
teaches authorized Captek training courses at his laboratory, having received his training from Mr. Aharon Whiteman, one of the developers of the Captek system and Americus Dental Lab.
