The Dentist and Sleep Disorders (Part II)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Snoring and Sleeping Disorders breathing affect millions of people in this country. The alert dentist should be able to screen his patient population and recognize the signs and symptoms of sleep disorders. The recognition of these signs and symptoms and the ability to treat some cases would allow them to be an integral member of the diagnostic and treatment team, along with their medical colleagues.The dentist role in the management of obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome are growing at an extraordinary rate. Oral appliance therapy is a well-accepted means of treatment for many patients and some cases the treatment of choice. Dr. Smith is an experienced clinician in the field of sleep disorders and will demonstrate for you how the dentist's role in the use of oral appliances can become a rewarding and profitable part of dental practice. In addition to the informative lectures there will be demonstrations on the correct procedures for taking a bite registration using the George Gauge and the use of the Pat_100 home sleep monitoring device for evaluation of sleep progress.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After participating in this educational activity the participant should be able to:

  • Have a knowledge of normal sleep physiology & an understanding of sleep disordered breathing
  • Have an understanding of child and adolescent sleep disorders
  • Have extensive knowledge of the reasons for evaluating patients for sleep disorders
  • Know how to evaluate a patient for oral appliance therapy who has been diagnosed with sleep breathing disorder
  • Get a basic understanding of selection of oral appliance for your patients with hands on taking actual registration with George Gauge


FACULTY: Charles D. Smith, D.D.S. Dr. Smith is currently an Associate Professor of Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning for the University of Florida College of Dentistry's Department of Operative Dentistry and an attending Dentist of the Parker E. Mahan Facial Pain Center, Division of Sleep Disorders. He is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, One Year Mini Residency University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and a Two Year Fellowship at the University of Florida Facial Pain Center. Dr. Smith is a member of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
