PHARMACOLOGY:

Drugs and Dentistry, Including Herbals and Natural Products; Latest Information to Keep Your Practice Current

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This all-new nuts-and-bolts course provides a mix of useful take-home information, relative to both conventional drugs and herbal supplements, for optimal care of your dental patients. Course updated to provide the most current information as of Summer of 2005.

Dr. Wynn goes beyond conventional drugs to discuss the current issues regarding herbal and dietary supplements as related to dental patients and treatment. Herbs that cause bleeding will be reviewed. Preoperative effects and effects on dental health of the more common supplements will be described; including Kava-Kava, Echinacea, St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, Arnica Montana, Feverfew, Saw Palmetto, Cat's Claw, Hawthorn, Bilberry, and others.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Get current on new analgesics; NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors and cardiovascular influences
  • Hear the latest on ibuprofen blocking aspirin's protective effects
  • Learn the most recent analgesic selection list for both pre-emptive analgesia and post-operative pain control, including new hydrocodone formulations and the unique use of the COX-2 inhibitors.
  • Get the latest information on drugs for RAU, herpes labialis, lichen planus and candidiasis
  • Learn the frequently asked questions about premedications to clarify any confusion about the pre-procedural use of antibiotics in the cardiovascular patient, prosthetic patients and Redux and Fen-Phen patients
  • Get current on antibiotics to treat odontogenic infections, consistent with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control
  • Hear information about the latest new dental drugs; including Arestin and Abreva, along with a complete listing of artificial saliva products used to manage dry mouth


FACULTY: Richard L Wynn, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology, University of Maryland Dental School, Lead Author of Drug Information Handbook for Dentistry, Drug Columnist for the Academy of General Dentistry and Consultant to Drug Industry. Dr. Wynn is a reviewer for the J Am Dental Assoc., and consultant to the United States Pharmacopoeia for new drugs, including herbals. He receives funded research from DOD/Army for studies of complementary medical therapies.
