News:

Dr. Scott Tomar is now the Department Chair for our new Department.  The new Department is called Community Dentsistry and Behavioral Science.  It includes what used to be the Divisions of Public Health Services and Research and Community Based Research. 

Dr. Scott Tomar was interviewed for the Post, the University of Florida's Health Science Center's Newletter.  The title of the article is "UF dentist helps solve fluoride fight in Eustis."  The interview can be found here.

Dr. Joe Riley has been promoted to the rank of associate professor with tenure on July 1, 2005. Congratulations goes out to him and his success!

Dr. H. Logan gave a talk at the recent American Assocation of Maxiofacial Prosthodontics Meeting in Ottawa, Canada on October 26, 2004. Her talk was on Surviving Head and Neck Cancer. 

August 3, 2004 - Dr. Scott Tomar was interviewed regarding his article in Cancer Causes and Control.  Here is the link to the interview which in entitled, "UF researchers discover racial disparities in oral cancer treatment and survival."

March 31, 2004 - Dr. Henrietta Logan and Dr. Jeff Gedney were interviewed regarding their article in the Journal of Pain.  Here is the link to the interview which is entitled, "UF researchers explore why patients' pain recall may be more than total."

<>Awards:

Barbara Hastie has won Best Poster Presentation in Neuromusculoskeletal Research at the UF Women's Health Research Center in 2005.

Henrietta L. Logan has recieved the Citation Award Society of Behavioral Medicane Poster Competetion Annual Meeting in April of 2005.

Barbara Hastie was awarded the American Pain Society's Management Scholars Program.  This award included specialized Resident's Training Program, all expenses paid to the American-Canadian Pain Society Meeting in Vancouver, and annual membership to the American Pain Society.

The American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD) has awarded the Distinguished Services Award for 2004 to our very own Scott Tomar.  This is a very huge honor and we are very proud of Dr. Tomar!

Rafael Urbino, a Senior dental student, has received the Dental Award for Community Dentistry and Dental Public Health presented by the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD).  He will also receive a year membership to the AAPHD.

Barbara Hastie was awarded the Health Disparities Scholar from the National Center on Minority Health & Health Disparities at the National Instituties of Health. 

The Journal of Public Health Dentistry has awarded the 2003 best paper to E. Beltran-Aguilar, D. Malvitz, S. Lockwood, G. Rozier, S. Tomar.  "Oral Health Surveillance: Past, Present, and Future Challenges"

Douglas Manning, a recent resident, won the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD) Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award, First Place.  His project was titled, "Examining Racial Disparities in Oral and Pharyngeal Cancer Mortality and Survival Rates: Is Health Insurance a Factor?"   His sponsor is Dr. Scott Tomar.  Congratulations Dr. Manning! 

Ethics Workshop:
Members of the American College of Dentist come to the College of Dentistry once a year to meet with the Junior students to discuss ethical situations they may come across in their future in dentistry.

Editoral Boards: 

Members of our faculty are on the editoral boards of different journals.

Dr. Fillingim is on the editoral board for the the Journal of Pain and the XX versus XY journal

Dr. Logan is also on the editoral board for the the Journal of Pain.
