4. Terminology for Curricular Activities
Seminars - defined as a group of students studying under a course director or another member of the course teaching team with each doing individual study and all exchanging results through a discussion session. These discussion sessions are not a primary method of instruction, and do not exceed 50 minutes in most instances. The maximum number of students attending these sessions is approximately 20. The attendance policy is at the discretion of the course director.
Conference - a formal exchange of views between the instructor(s) and students and is a primary method of instruction. Such meetings are structured to have a formal lecture segment followed by a question-answer session. These conferences are a required attendance activity for the students and are limited to a 50 minute time frame in most instances. These sessions should be limited to approximately 20 students to enhance the opportunity for maximum discussion.
Lecture - a formal presentation of new material by the instructor with little or no participation by the students. This is a primary method of instruction and is required attendance. The formal lecture should generally not exceed 50 minutes. There is no restriction on numbers attending the lecture as this form of instruction does not encourage active participation by the audience.
Clinical Conference - feature mainly outside speakers. These sessions may be somewhat longer in duration and are primarily be designed for an entire class or for several classes. These conferences will be scheduled to allow maximum participation.
Field Trips - a method of primary instruction that enriches institutional study by relating the practical aspects with the theoretical concepts in community setting. They may be a required segment of curricular activities. These trips should be held to a minimum consistent with the objectives of the modules, and also limited in number of scheduled students. In most cases, these sessions do not exceed a half-day period of time.
Demonstrations - a formal method of instruction that implies the demonstration of a technical skill that the students must later perform or display competency. These sessions may be scheduled as an initial segment of a larger laboratory or clinical session that may, or may not be, mandatory attendance.
Laboratory - primarily scheduled basic science or preclinical technique activities
in the laboratory setting. It is possible that laboratory sessions and/or demo-lab
sessions are scheduled as primary methods of instruction with required attendance.
These sessions should generally not exceed a half-day in duration.
