Information Management for Students
Information and computer technology are essential to twenty-first century dentistry and dental education at the University of Florida . Dental students are expected to use information technology during their entire educational program at UF.
Email Policy
Within the College of Dentistry , email is the primary mode of communication between faculty, administration, staff, and students. Students are required to check their email daily, on all scheduled school days. A Gatorlink account is required as each student's primary email address. Official email will be sent exclusively to GatorLinkUserName@ufl.edu. The preferred email address recorded for all students will be the GatorLink address. This is the email address displayed in the online phonebook. For further information concerning using Gatorlink email, consult: http://www.it.ufl.edu/training/email/index.htm
Curriculum Use Policy
Didactic and Preclinical Curriculum – Competency in the use of a computer and access to and ongoing use of a computer are required for all DMD students. Each student is expected to have personal access to a computer to supplement and support instruction outside of the classroom. Currently, there is no requirement to possess a personal computer in the classroom. Typical uses for computer access include posting of class assignments and grades via BlackBoard, on-line academic advising and registration, official university correspondence and announcements, and student and faculty evaluations and surveys.
While the university
offers limited access to computers through its computer labs,
students are expected to access a computer that is capable of
dial-up or network connection to the Internet, graphical access
to the World Wide Web, and productivity functions such as word
processing, presentation and spreadsheet calculation.
The College of Dentistry follows the general recommendations for computer hardware and software published by the Center for Instructional and Research computing Activities (CIRCA). See http://www.circa.ufl.edu/computers/ for more information.
Clinical
Curriculum – The computer is an essential instrument in our clinical
curriculum. Dental student clinical patient management routinely
uses information technology, including electronic patient records,
computer-based patient scheduling, digital radiography and distance
learning technologies.
