Serving the underserved:
That is the goal of the University of Florida's Statewide Network
for Community Oral Health.
The
network was established in 1997 by UFCD to provide oral health
services to low-income and low-access populations in Florida ranging
as far south as Miami and as far north as Jacksonville.
UFCD's patient base comes from 46 Florida counties and 80% of
the patients UFCD treats have incomes below 200% of the poverty
level.
Community
Based Clinics
The
Community-Based Programs
established in communities such as Hialeah,
Jacksonville,
St. Petersburg, and
Apopka also provide cost-effective community-based learning experiences
to pre-doctoral students.
UFCD
postdoctoral dental residents benefit from Community-Based Programs
as well. CBP increase the training opportunities for residents
in Florida through hands-on experience in clinics and through
distance learning lectures
using our V-Tel videoconferencing network. It's
hoped by providing future dentists in Florida a chance to work
in medically and dentally underserved areas it might encourage
them to establish private practices in these communities.
Mission:
.to
provide predoctoral and postdoctoral dental students with opportunities
to learn and practice in interdisciplinary, community based health
care settings committed to provide health care to Florida's underserved.
Goals:
To
provide community based, interdisciplinary educational experiences
for pre-doctoral & postdoctural residents
To
develop general dentistry residency training positions in the
community
To
provide quality oral health care to underserved patients
To
form bonds with communities and organizations
