UFCD AEGD: Hialeah Dental Clinic Program Information 

Specific Goals of the UFCD Hialeah AEGD program:

Graduates of the University of Florida Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at Hialeah will be able to:

1. Appropriately identify apprehensive patients requiring behavioral, sedative and/or analgesic intervention.
2. Select appropriate anesthetic drugs for patient care.
3. Use appropriate anesthetic techniques to achieve profound anesthesia.
4. Identify and manage complications secondary to dental anesthesia.
5. Appropriately and accurately monitor vital signs.
6. Understand the pharmacology of drugs selected for anesthesia.
7. Understand the use of emergency drugs and equipment.
8. Manage pain and anxiety through the use of local anesthesia, behavioral management, oral and/or nitrous oxide conscious sedation.
9. Efficiently manage emergency call for patients that present to the dental clinic.
10. Evaluate the course of the patient’s chief complaint.
11. Prescribe and carry out definitive procedures necessary to relieve the patient’s chief complaint.
12. Consult with dental specialists, attending dentists, and other healthcare personnel as needed.
13. Provide appropriate follow-up care for patients.
14. Diagnose and treat pulpal and periradicular pathology.
15. Utilize contemporary techniques when treating pulpal pathology.
16. Treatment plan and execute complex endodontic cases.
17. Understand the criteria for patient selection when considering dental implants.
18. Understand the importance of, and execute, multidisciplinary pre-surgical treatment planning of implant cases.
19. Understand and participate in dental implant placement and recovery.
20. Understand the various prosthodontic implant restorations available.
21. Evaluate dental implant complications and solutions.
22. Communicate his/her role as member of the Implant Team.
23. Critically analyze and review current dental literature.
24. Evaluate major medical disorders that may impact oral health care.
25. Make informed judgements and clinical decisions regarding the potential risk and management of the medically involved or medically compromised patient during operative and surgical dental procedures.
26. Perform and/or manage the examination, biopsy, diagnosis and treatment of lesions of the oral cavity and related structures.
27. Arrive at a prognosis for various oral conditions diagnosed.
28. Determine when appropriate referral is indicated.
29. Perform the patient history, limited physical examination, physical/dental diagnosis and medical risk assessment.
30. Perform routine exodontia and biopsies.
31. Perform skills in managing surgical complications.
32. Perform or manage complex oral surgery cases.
33. Incorporate standardized oral photographic techniques into practice.
34. Produce quality intraoral and extraoral digital photographs.
35. Incorporate digital images into electronic PowerPoint presentations.
36. Develop a working knowledge of common occlusal/orthodontic problems.
37. Develop a logical, sequential procedure for diagnosis and analysis of orthodontic problems.
38. Understand orthodontic treatment goals.
39. Treat minor orthodontic problems.
40. Understand the anatomic and emotional differences between the pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients that impact treatment.
41. Utilize appropriate behavioral management skills to effectively treat the pediatric patient.
42. Provide comprehensive pediatric dental care in a general practice setting.
43. Diagnose and differentiate periodontal diseases.
44. Efficiently treatment plan, manage and maintain patients with periodontal disease.
45. Understand the daily business and management issues associated with dental practice.
46. Understand business plans, insurance, practice development, personnel, quality records, informed consent and quality assurance.
47. Understand the peer review process.
48. Understand the fundamental principles of dental ethics.
49. Understand primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and implement these procedures on their patients.
50. Discuss and implement general approaches of prevention for dental caries and periodontal disease.
51. Understand and implement maintenance protocols for natural vs. implant restored dentitions.
52. Integrate preventive dentistry into the comprehensive care of patients.
53. Provide general dentistry to patients with comprehensive care needs.
54. Reach sound decisions regarding appropriate referral.
55. Restore teeth to optimum esthetics, health and function and understand alternative methods of accomplishing treatment objectives.
56. Evaluate and use new operative techniques and dental materials.
57. Integrate complex removable prosthodontic therapy with other dental treatment.
58. Understand the psychological aspects of both complete and partial denture prosthodontics.
59. Design removable partial dentures for patients.
60. Perform technical procedures related to conventional complete dentures, immediate dentures, overdentures, and removable partial dentures.
61. Integrate fixed prosthodontics therapy with all dental therapeutic needs for the patient.
62. Understand the basis for shade selection in ceramic restorations.
63. Choose the appropriate design and material to meet the requirements of the patient.
64. Provide options for patient treatment.
65. Understand and comply with HRS and OSHA guidelines as they pertain to safety, infection control, biohazardous waste and hazardous communication.
66. Understand the process required to prepare and train employees in programs related to safety, infection control, biohazardous waste and hazardous communication programs.
67. Integrate all phases of dental care in a logical and economically sound manner.
68. Comprehensively plan all cases to address the complete dental condition.
69. Design alternative plans to address patient’s requirements and circumstances.
70. Educate patients so they make informed decisions about their dental care.
71. Sequence dental care to meet the patient’s recognized need while maximizing health and function.
