UFCD AEGD: Hialeah Dental Clinic 

Mission Statement : The University of Florida 's Hialeah Dental Clinic AEGD affords residents the privilege of serving underserved urban populations while, at the same time, gaining valuable educational and clinical experience under appropriate supervision with real patients. The objective of the program is to provide advanced training in clinical dentistry and the applied basic sciences beyond the level of predoctoral education. The program is designed to enhance the scope of knowledge and clinical skills required to provide comprehensive dental care for all patient populations.

Oral Health Care Services : Opened in 1997, the Hialeah Dental Clinic averages 200 patients weekly. The majority of the patients in the clinic are adults requiring comprehensive oral health care with the remainder of the patient base being children and senior citizens. Residents and students enrolled at the clinic are actively engaged in providing all phases of dentistry, including: diagnostic and preventive services, endodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, restorative dentistry (including operative, fixed & removable prosthodontics and implant dentistry), orthodontics and pediatric dentistry. back to the top

Educational Programs : Four Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residents and eight Foreign Trained Dental (FTD) students have provided oral health care services to the Hialeah community each year. AEGD residents apply to serve in the facility for one year. Foreign Trained Dental students hold dental degrees and have practiced in other countries; however, they are required to complete a two-year certification program to be eligible to apply for licensure in the State of Florida . The AEGD didactic program includes a series of scheduled and structured teaching sessions at advanced levels of training devoted to pertinent topics in the basic, diagnostic, and clinical sciences related the comprehensive practice of dentistry. The AEGD clinical program provides residents the opportunity and experience to take responsibility for the comprehensive care of varied and complex patients. Special emphasis is allowed for the resident's special interests and the institutions resources. Over fifty faculty members, including specialists from all dental disciplines and general dentists, provide continuous coverage in the clinic. The clinical program is designed to model the private practice setting. Patient treatment is frequently complex and challenging, with multiple opportunities for experience in dental implants, endodontics, periodontal surgery, advanced prosthodontics, oral surgery, pedodontics, and orthodontics.

Group seminars, monthly literature reviews case presentations/treatment planning sessions, and table clinic presentations at the Miami Winter Meeting are part of the educational program. Hialeah AEGD residents have the opportunity to interact and train with residents and faculty of other affiliated dental programs in the Miami area.

The University of Florida College of Dentistry provides a stipend of $30,000 to residents enrolled in this program. Residents are afforded all benefits and privileges of all other postgraduate UFCD House Staff. Dental Facilities : The spacious 7,500 square foot dental facility has twenty dental operatories, twelve of which are dedicated to resident and student patient care activities, on-site radiology services (digital radiography coming in 2005), a dental laboratory, complete sterilization area, Global surgical microscope with monitor for teaching purposes, digital photographic equipment, rotary endodontic equipment, NobelBiocare, Straumann and Biohorizons implant systems, Hu-Friedy cassette instrument systems and Kavo handpieces for use during the program, A library with Web access, ample study areas, administrative office space, and a conference room enhanced with interactive distance learning technology to enhance the educational program.

Patient Population : The Hialeah Dental Clinic sees more than 5,000 patient visits a year that include insured, uninsured and Medicaid patients. The age distribution of the patients is 13% children, 80% adult, and 7% senior citizens.

Personnel : The clinical and administrative staff is comprised of five Core faculty, more than fifty Courtesy faculty; including generalists and specialists, eight expanded-function dental assistants, one part-time dental hygienist, one program assistant, one fiscal assistant and one receptionist.
