Discussion of the impact of discoveries from the genome project that will increase our understanding of oral health and disease. Studies of bacterial genomes are providing new opportunities and strategies to more effectively treat infectious diseases, including dental caries. Studies of the human genome are providing greater understanding of the underlying causes of craniofacial disorders and conditions. Further advances will provide new biologically-based approaches to manage the sequela of disease and may, ultimately, provide opportunities to preemptively treat problems before they emerge clinically.
