Main Interests:

My research program is concerned with elucidating the pathogenic bacteria associated with the initiation and progression of destructive periodontal disease in man and designing effective therapeutic regimens for the elimination and/or control of the disease producing organisms. The bacteria species associated with both active and inactive periodontally diseased sites are being monitored cross sectionally and longitudinally in 2 distinct periodontal patient groups prior to and after antimicrobial therapy. The goals of these studies are to determine:the bacterial species responsible for the disease process;nonpathogenic species associated with health;bacterial interaction;mechanisms of pathogenicity;effect and duration of antimicrobial therapy;efficacy of different antimicrobial agents. Other projects are concerned with antibiotic susceptibilities and mechanisms of resistance which include bacterial betalactamases and plasmid mediated resistance development of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probes for detection of periodontopathogens, in vivo antibiotic levels, and local delivery of antimicrobial compounds to the site of infection.
